Renewable Energy

We recognise our obligation to minimise the impact of our operations on the environment and the community. We have different initiatives in place across the business to off-set our carbon emissions including utilising alternative, renewable sources of energy.

Environment

As one of the UK’s leading by-products management and recycling companies, we understand the need to develop a sustainable business plan.

We are constantly looking at ways to conduct our operation in an environmentally friendly way whilst being as unobtrusive as possible to further minimise the impact of the operation on our neighbours.

At Leo Group we are working towards carbon neutrality through the installation of renewable energy sources at our processing sites.

To ensure the Leo Group is following the UK drive towards a more sustainable environment, we have policies in place to guide our actions and business decisions, from strategic to operational level. In addition to our policies, as a business we are continuously investing in the latest technologies to reduce our carbon footprint.

We have implemented many energy-efficient technologies across our sites including but not limited to, biomass energy, wind power, solar energy, effluent treatment plants.

Odour Abatement

Leo Group operates in a highly regulated industry and within the rules set out in each site’s environmental permit. Compliance and environmental impacts – effluents, emissions, waste, energy and odours – are constantly monitored.

In line with our corporate strategy and policy, Leo Group is committed to investment and continuous improvement, using the best available techniques to ensure that high operating standards are continually maintained at all our facilities. In doing so, protecting the environment and reducing CO2 emissions are our top priorities.

For odour abatement and air pollution control systems, we use latest state-of-the-art technology that meets the requirements of sector guidance and best available techniques (BAT).

At our production plants, Leo Group utilises thermal destruction of odours using thermal oxidisers for intensive cooker odours and large biofilters to treat the internal building air.

Thermal Oxidisers

High intensity cookers produce gases that are treated by thermal oxidation to destroy odour. To do this, the gases are extracted into the combustion chamber of the thermal oxidiser where the odorous compounds are combusted from the air at temperatures in excess of 850oC. The de-odourised air is then released from the stack and the difference in temperature when it mixes with the cooler air results in the visible plume of water vapour.

Biofilters

Our biofilters are used for abating lower-intensity odours such as extracted building air from storage and processing rooms. This biological treatment is achieved by bacterial metabolism of organic compounds into non-odorous products.

We also operate a transparent business policy and encourage the local community and general public to visit our premises. We welcome anyone who would like to visit one of our sites to take a look behind the scenes.
