Scot Proteins Ltd is Leo Group’s category 1 ABP rendering plant in North Scotland. The site processes animal by-products that are unfit for the food chain, and services fallen stock from farms.
Leo Group acquired the site in 2008 and began recommissioning the plant in 2019. The facility is now fully operational, expanding our existing capacity for category 1 ABP material production and runs concurrently to the Omega Proteins Bradford facility.
The on-site rendering process has two main products: tallow, used as a raw material in the biodiesel industry, and meat and bone meal (MBM) which is used as an alternative to fossil fuels in industries such as power generation and cement production, and also used as a fuel for the biomass energy plant at our sister facility in Penrith.
We also use environmentally friendly energy sources across our facilities. In Kintore we have a wind turbine which produces electricity for the site and we’re also upgrading an effluent treatment plant which will recycle wastewater from the rendering process making it fit to reuse.
