Biopower, one of Leo Group’s subsidiary companies, is a European renewable energy company based in Belgium.
Biopower is a pioneer in the field of biomass, an area Leo Group also possesses a great wealth of expertise. The company operates state-of-the-art biofuel power stations and storage facilities in Ostend, Mouscron and Bruges.
The company has been investing in innovative and large-scale installations producing renewable energy from waste products since inception. While wind and solar energy depend on climatological factors, renewable energy from biomass can guarantee stable and continuous energy production. Through this operation, the Group is now able to take animal by-products and fallen stock and convert them into electricity, controlling the entire supply chain.
The Biopower refinery in Ostend produces renewable energy from animal by-products such as tallow and oils. After arrival at the refining division, animal by-products are further refined to biofuel (free fatty acid <2) that can be used for green electricity or second-generation biodiesel production.
Biopower has the capacity to process 60,000 tonnes per year, generating 55MW from its three sites which provides enough electricity to power 120,000 households for a year.
The refining department is capable of processing waste fats ranging from the highest to the lowest possible quality. This gives us a significant competitive advantage as we are able to process anything in a complex and highly regulated industry.
Our site in Ostend also uses the process of glycerolysis. This technology allows us to use 100% of the tallows and oils we produce, allowing our plant to have a unique processing system for generating renewable energy.
