Leo Group was established as Swalesmoor Mink Farm in 1971 by founders Leo and Margaret Sawrij, when they acquired a 10-acre property on the outskirts of Halifax which has since become home to our Head Office.
Fast forward almost 50 years and under their son, Danny’s leadership, Swalesmoor Farm is a bustling site, home to 235 employees and still with the original farmhouse on the plot. The Group’s central functions of accounts, environmental and technical, health & safety, HR, PR & marketing are based at the facility. With our raw pet food operation, Omega Proteins Halifax; transport division, Haulage Holdings; and Leo Sawrij Ltd which manages our property portfolio, also located at the site.
We have rendering facilities across the UK including Omega Proteins Penrith, Omega Proteins Bradford and Scot Proteins Kintore, plus an array of fallen stock collection businesses in Scotland, England and Wales, as well as bulking operations and storage facilities.
The past decade has seen the Group evolve further with us investing heavily in our plants to ensure we are amongst the most advanced and efficient in the world. As well as adopting the latest environmentally friendly technologies including thermal oxidisers, biofilters, water effluent treatment plants, wind turbines, solar and biomass.
Leo Group has also diversified its portfolio acquiring international businesses; Biopower in Belgium and BJK Industries in South Africa. As well as bringing our logistics and transport operation in house with the creation of Haulage Holdings, we have further strengthened this area by taking ownership of Mercedes-Benz Bell Truck and Van ensuring we have access to the very best vehicles for our large fleet.
